Around the World in a Cement Boat
The plan? Sail around the world.
The cast? The entire family, including a newborn, and a variety of crew.
The boat? The Berenice, seen in the cover photo. A 39-foot ferro-cement ketch built by the author's dad (a trained chiropractor) in his spare time.
Motivated by Joshua Slocum's voyage around the world but hampered by a tight budget, the author's family set sail on the voyage of a lifetime when she was in second grade. In Around the World in a Cement Boat, she tells the story of her girlhood adventures. From battling a cyclone at sea, facing an oncoming oil tanker, exploring a deserted island, and escaping a harbor at midnight, to dealing with a destructive crew member, eating peanut butter and onion sandwiches, and being rescued at sea, her story is full of excitement and adventure.
Will the family actually finish the journey around the world? Or will the perils of the sea stop them short of their final destination?
Written by a former classroom teacher and homeschooling mom, the book includes maps, a glossary, discussion questions, and activity ideas. Designed for middle grades readers, the tale will appeal to anyone who dreams of adventure.

I got mine last week, read it, and can't wait to create a unit study from it.

Loved this book! Totally awesome!
I could not put it down, I had to find out what was going to happen next. I also
love how perfect it is for my kids! Vocabulary for the unusual boating words,
questions for insight as well. Great book! Thank you Cheryl for writing
