Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: Did you enjoy sailing around the world?
A: Very much. Q: Were you scared during the storms and such? A: Not as much as you might think. I was too young to really understand the dangers. Looking back from an adult perspective, many of the situations seem much more frightening now. Q: Would you take your own family on such a journey now? A: Since my husband is not a sailor and has no desire to be one, probably not. Q: Were your parents crazy to take a newborn along? A: No. There are dangers in any life situation. Q: What are your parents doing now? A: They live in northern Florida in a house that Dad built. Raised on stilts, it's similar in design to some Australian beach houses. |
Q: How long did it take you to write the book?
A: I began it in 1997 shortly after visiting Australia again. I worked on it off and on until its publication in 2013. Sixteen years total. Q: What convinced you to finish work on it after all this time? A: First, I wanted the story in writing for my own children. More importantly, when faced with a lot of stress in other areas of my life, writing provided a huge distraction that helped me cope. Q: Which island did you enjoy the most? A: It's hard to choose. They each have their own character and friendly people. But if I had to choose, I'd choose Egmont (the deserted atoll). Q: Would you want to travel the world again? A: I loved traveling and went on adventures of my own as an adult. Money is always an object, though. And I currently enjoy the thrill of having long-term friends, knowing local places and being known, too. Besides, my children would hate to leave their friends. |
